The 7 Best-Tasting Protein Bars

BPBG's 7 Best-Tasting Protein Bars

A protein bar wrapper is one of the best tricks in the fitness industry. Tell me if you’ve ever experienced this. You’re on the hunt for that perfect protein bar to supplement your diet. You want something that has the high protein but actually tastes good, too. You go to your favorite supplement shop, or you browse online. You get a recommendation from a store clerk and you even take a look at several online reviews.

While browsing, all of a sudden, it hits you! You see that wrapper with the perfect design!  The light bounces off of the shiny wrapper just right!  The Hallelujah Chorus plays. This protein bar almost grabs you by the shirt and says “BUY ME!” Your hand darts out on its own (or clicks on its own if you’re shopping online). You get home and rush to rip off that colorful wrapper in anticipation…Okay, so maybe it doesn’t look anything like it does on the wrapper, but surely it tastes good. It says award-winning taste on the package after all, right?

With a gigantic, wide-eyed grin of excitement on your face, you take a bite.  You chew and you process.  You chew and process some more.  Your excited eyes narrow to about half their original size. You chew and salivate some more, simply because that’s what mouths do. Your smile also begins to sink as you soon realize that this bar tastes so bad that you might not even be able to finish it. You take one more bite. It’s a lost cause. Zoom in on the quarter-eaten bar, with the wrapper pulled halfway down, sitting at the top of your kitchen garbage can.

If this has ever happened to you, you know how frustrating it can be to find a protein bar that doesn’t taste like…well…garbage. So it’s time toss you a protein bar life-preserver. We decided to create this short list of protein bars that we’ve personally tested and re-tested to make sure they’re good. Reviews don’t always make a bar taste great. Sometimes a bar may have a protein core that’s so rich that it kind of kills the flavor, or maybe the chocolate and other ingredients make the bar taste super synthetic.

Granted these are not necessarily the healthiest protein bars, or the ones that are the perfect balance of nutrition and flavor. Every single bar on this list is based PURELY on taste. Here are, in no particular order, BPBG’s (best protein bar guide’s) seven, best-tasting protein bars.

1. Supreme’s Peanut Butter Pretzel

Supreme Protein Bar Peanut Butter Pretzel Twist

Yes, yes, yes! We really like this one. This bar is chunky, chock full of tasty stuff: a light layer of caramel, pretzel pieces, nuts, peanut butter, chewy inside, and even a peanut butter protein coating. With so many wonderful ingredients, you might worry about it being an “overkill” protein bar, but the first bite will tell you otherwise. Supreme got this one right. Give it a try, but please try to limit your intake to one a day or even one every 2-3 days.

2. ISS Research’s OhYeah! Peanut Butter Crunch

Oh Yeah Protein Bar Peanut Butter Crunch

When people talk about that fence between candy bars and protein bars, the OhYeah! bars are like the rebel bars that decided to climb the fence, and just sit on top of it with a leg on each side. I honestly think someone on the ISS team sits and thinks “What candy bar can we mirror with this latest protein bar?” The PB Crunch is debatably the best-tasting bar we’ve had the pleasure of eating. It’s one of the very few bars with a protein core that doesn’t detract from the bar’s overall taste. Seriously! The peanut butter crunch bar actually even goes so far as to put shelled peanut butter candies on the outside of the bar. We’re not saying it’s going to win any health contests, we’re just saying it’s damn tasty.

3. Quest’s Apple Pie Protein Bar

Quest Protein Bar Apple Pie
If you’re okay with bars that are  little on the stickier side and sometimes a bit rich-tasting then you DEFINITELY need to try this one!  The Quest Apple Pie Bar is “honest-to-God” delicious and actually tastes like what it was intended to, a slice of gourmet apple pie. With real apple bits inside the bar, you’ll be eating this one over and over again!

4. ISS Research Oh Yeah Chocolate & Caramel Bar

Chocolate and Caramel Oh Yeah Bar

Yep, another OhYeah! bar on the list. We don’t apologize for doubling up. If a bar is truly a good-tasting one, it deserves recognition. Remember how we said that OhYeah! bars can taste a lot like candy bars? This one tastes so much like a Baby Ruth that it’s scary…er…tasty. Eat with confidence.

5. Clif’s Chocolate Mint Builder Bar

Clif Chocolate Mint Builder Bar
I don’t know any other way to say it, but this Clif Builder bar is the shiznit! Taste-wise there is absolutely no way for me to knock it. Sure we could critique other points about the bar, but we’re not going to do that. Today the Clif Mint Chocolate Chip Builder bar is just one of those one’s you have to try at least once based on taste alone.

6. Quest’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bar

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Quest Bar

Here is another solid choice from the Quest crew! This only issue with this bar is that it’s a little sweet to the taste, but that doesn’t keep us from being repeat eaters of this freakin’ thing. What’s not to love?  You get real, delicious, chunks of chocolate embedded in a lightly nutty, chewy protein bar base. The chocolate chip cookie dough is one of those “easy-on-the-palate” kind of protein bars. Score another point for Quest!

7. Supreme Chocolate Caramel Nut

Supreme Protein Bar Caramel Nut Chocolate

We’ll finish this list (for now) with another great one from Supreme. The name says it all. This bar has nuts, caramel, chocolate and even some protein ‘rice puffs’ to make this a protein bar experience nothing but a pleasant one. This tastes like a lesser known candy bar that was also quite tasty (I wonder if they sell them anymore), a 100 Grand bar. Yum!

Do you notice anything strange about this list? Some of the protein bars belong to the same brand. Why? Having eaten many protein bars, we’ve found that some brands really focus on having an entire line of bars that taste good, instead of just one or two flavors in the brand. With OhYeah(ISS Research), Supreme and Quest, these protein bars are extremely tasty and you’d be doing your taste buds a solid if you tried them. We suspect Clif’s Builder brand is a similar when it comes to taste standards, but we’re going to have to do more “field research” (i.e.-wolf down of these delicious bars).

This list is a work in progress, as we find additional bars that taste good, this list will grow and adapt accordingly.
